Caring for Your Knitwear
Proper care and maintenance of your knitwear can ensure it stays beautiful and lasts longer. Follow these simple steps to keep your knitwear in top condition:
1. Washing
Hand Washing:
- Use Cold Water: Fill a basin with cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent specifically designed for wool or delicate fabrics.
- Gently Agitate: Submerge the knitwear and gently swish it around. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric to prevent stretching.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, cold water. Gently rinse the garment until all soap is removed.
Machine Washing:
- Use a Mesh Bag: Place the knitwear in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging or stretching.
- Choose the Right Cycle: Use the gentle or wool cycle on your washing machine with cold water.
- Mild Detergent: Add a small amount of wool-friendly detergent.
2. Drying
- Avoid the Dryer: Never put knitwear in the dryer as it can shrink and damage the fibres.
- Lay Flat to Dry: After washing, reshape the garment and lay it flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel with the garment inside to remove excess water.
- Air Dry: Lay the knitwear flat on a drying rack, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
3. Storing
- Clean Before Storing: Ensure your knitwear is clean before storing to prevent moth damage.
- Fold, Don’t Hang: Fold your knitwear to maintain its shape and avoid stretching.
- Use Storage Bags: Store in breathable cotton bags or containers with cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths.
4. Dealing with Pilling
- Pilling: Use a fabric shaver or a sweater stone to gently remove pills from the surface of your knitwear.
- Regular Maintenance: Regularly removing pills can keep your knitwear looking fresh and new.
5. Mending and Repairs
- Repair Snags Promptly: Use a needle to gently pull snags through to the inside of the garment.
- Patch Holes: Small holes can be patched or darned to extend the life of your knitwear.
6. General Tips
- Rotate Your Knitwear: Give your knitwear a break between wears to let the fibres rest and recover.
- Avoid Over-washing: Knitwear doesn’t need to be washed after every wear. Spot clean as needed and wash after several wears.
